Scrapbook of Edward Baldwin Russell, 1866-1896.

The scrapbook documents Russell's academic endeavors as an undergraduate at Harvard and chiefly consists of examination papers from all four academic years, 1868-1872. The volume also contains laws and regulations, tabular views of exercises, term bills, and notices on conditions and makeup examinations. In addition, the scrapbook provides limited documentation of Russell's social and extracurricular activities, containing programs for concerts by the Pierian Sodality and Glee Club, Pierian Sodality and Glee Club program, Class Day circulars and programs, Russell's membership certificate for the Institute of 1770, class songs, receipts from the Harvard Advocate, the Harvard University Boat Club and the Harvard Reading Room Association, and invitations and tickets to Cambridge assemblies. Two notable items are an 1871 map for a fair for the "sufferers in France" from the Franco-Prussian War and an invitation from two classmates, illustrated with their photographs and hand-drawn sketches of playing cards, to their "Kursaale." Loose material contained within the scrapbook document Russell's continued association with the College as an alumnus and include an 1866 appeal to build the eventual Memorial Hall, ephemera from Harvard's 250th anniversary in 1886, and ephemera from the Class of 1872. Also included are three items documenting Russell's attendance at Boston University's law school and his membership in Massachusetts' First Corps of Cadets in 1875. These materials were removed from the scrapbook and placed in chronological order in folders during processing.
